 “Somebody's gonna drop everything
Run out and crank up their car
Hit the gas, get there fast
Never stop to think 'what's in it for me?' or 'it's way too far'
They just show on up with their big old heart…”
~ Tracy Lawrence, You Find Out Who Your Friends Are

This section is going to focus primarily on the bounce boxes used while riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.  The bounce box concept comes from the long distance backpacking community, hikers have been using this strategy on the AT, PCT, CDT and countless others for years.  The concept is simple, you have pre-packed boxes waiting for you general delivery at designated post offices along the way.  The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route and its hiking cousin, the Continental Divide Trail utilize a lot of the same towns as resupply points, so the post offices are used to the General Delivery Traffic.  The sections here:

  1. Picking towns for bounce boxes.
  2. Spacing out bounce boxes on the GDMBR.
  3. How I set up my bounce boxes, what worked and what didn’t.

 Picking Towns for Bounce Boxes.

My judgement wasn’t the best in this area, but considering I went into it blind, it worked out okay.  Smaller towns seem to work better for rest days and resupply drops…the only drawback was that the grocery stores didn’t have the variety the bigger towns did.  The larger the town the longer the distance likely between where you are staying and the post office.  To keep things simple, I’ll just list the towns, north to south that I noted would have been good bounce box drop locations:

Eureka, MT

Seeley Lake, MT

Lincoln, MT

Lima, MT

Pinedale, WY

Kremmling, CO

Salida, CO

Del Norte, CO

Cuba, NM

Sliver City, NM (not the best, but kind of mandatory)
